“One of my first private lessons was with a 6 year old who was afraid of going in without water wings. He was entirely reliant on them and wouldn’t let go of me without wearing them. However, I leveled with him and spoke to him as if he were a friend, a tactic I use often, to let him know that the water wings would only hold him back mentally and physically pushing against the water. By the end of 10 one hour lessons, he was diving down 10 ft to pick up a water filled resistance ball and swimming all 4 strokes at the surface at an advanced level for his age.
